A Hong Kong tourist has been killed in Japan after being hit by a train while reportedly taking photographs standing on railway tracks.
The woman was standing on the tracks to take photos of the sea before being hit by the train in Otaru city in Hokkaido on Thursday, Xinhua News Agency said, citing Japanese media.
The tourist was certified dead after being rushed to hospital. Japanese media said she was 61 years old and that the accident happened at Asari Station.
The Immigration Department said it had reached out to the Commissioner’s Office of China’s Foreign Ministry in Hong Kong and the Chinese consulate in Sapporo to learn more about the incident, adding it had contacted the victim’s family to provide the necessary help.
