The Year of the Dragon in 2024 is opening the door for us to witness new challenges for the economic prosperity, social equity, and political governance of both the Hong Kong and Macau Special Administrative Regions (SARs). This article is going to evaluate the challenges of socio-economic governance in the two cities.
First, while Macau has envisaged a return of revenues in the casino and gaming industry, Hong Kong has been suffering from a vast number of Hongkongers who have been spending a lot in the neighbouring regions of Shenzhen and the Greater Bay Area (GBA). Since the end of Covid-19 and its variants, Macau has seen a steady return of tourists from the mainland, and they have been sustaining the development of the casino and gaming industry in a positive way.
