Some 1.43 million tourists visited Hong Kong during the eight-day Chinese New Year Golden Week, reaching prepandemic levels.
Of those arrivals during the holiday that ended on Saturday, over 1.25 million were from the mainland.
Mainland arrivals peaked on February 12, the third day of the Lunar New Year, with about 186,000 visitors.
The port of entry with the highest daily average number of mainland visitors was West Kowloon Station, followed by Lo Wu port.
“The number of mainland visitors during the Golden Week exceeded the level in the same period in 2018, intensifying the ambiance and also increasing the income of the catering and retail industries,” Secretary for Culture, Sports and Tourism Kevin Yeung Yun-hung noted.
But legislators and industry leaders grumbled that business turnover remained below the prepandemic level.
