Beijing has announced plans to designate 2025 as ‘Visit Nepal Year’ in China, a surprise move seen as an attempt to leverage tourism diplomacy amid unsuccessful attempts to involve Nepal in China’s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) projects. This announcement was made during the 16th meeting of the Nepal-China Diplomatic Consultation Mechanism, and marked an unusual step given China’s limited history of promoting single countries as tourism destinations. Despite the announcement, the two nations failed to sign the anticipated BRI implementation deal. Nepal has yet to agree to this deal.
