Citizens of Iceland can now travel within the European Economic Area using updated ID cards instead of passports. These cards, considered ‘travel documents’, feature a large cardholder photo, a passport-like chip, and nationality details, meeting international standards and EU regulations.

The application process for the new ID cards has commenced at the Country Magistrates, with embassy and consulate applications opening on April 1. Even those with valid passports must appear in person for the domestic and international application process for an ID card. Notably, passport photos cannot be used for ID cards.
