India’s freshly appointed Tourism & Culture Minister is implementing a proactive strategy for the country’s tourism industry by requesting a full review of the current Goods and Services Tax (GST). The proposed changes include a 12% GST for all types of accommodations and restaurants, both with full setoffs, and a lower 1.8% rate for tour operators. These proposals highlight the new minister’s modern, open-minded intake and have been warmly welcomed by industry insiders such as Aashish Gupta from FAITH and Bobby KS Sawhney from ITTA. However, Jyoti Mayal from TAAI urges the government to also consider balancing the income tax policies related to GST and Tax Collected at Source (TCS) regulations. The review and potential adjustment of the nation’s tax guidelines signals the government’s dedication to improving and growing India’s tourism sector.
