Jaipur: One of the ancient forms of literature, travel writing battles with the question of whether it should be subjective or objective. How much the narratorial voice should intrude into the story requires judgement, said Hugh Thomson, the author of ‘The Green Road into the Trees’, at a panel-heavy session of Jaipur Literature Festival (JLF) on Friday.
“Earlier, the writer was supposed to be there. It is all about the author, their journeys, and very little about the place they are in these days,” said Thomson, adding that travel writers should look out of the window, observe and absorb the world, and interpret it for the reader.
