When we are travelling and are having a lot of fun, there are times when we just wish the day would never end. What if we were to tell you that there are incredible places on Earth where there are summer days that just don’t end. Yes, we are talking about the Midnight Sun, a captivating natural phenomenon where the sun remains visible at local midnight. This phenomenon occurs in regions north of the Arctic Circle and south of the Antarctic Circle during their respective summer months.
We’ll get to travel soon, but before that, let’s try and understand what the Midnight Sun is all about.
Our planet Earth is tilted at an angle of approximately 23.5 degrees relative to its orbit around the sun. During the summer solstice (June 21) the pole in the corresponding hemisphere is tilted towards the sun, resulting in continuous daylight for several weeks or even months. The result? The duration and intensity of the Midnight Sun increase with proximity to the poles.
