The Padres brought 16 pitchers to South Korea, with another on the way.
Starting pitcher Dylan Cease, acquired in a trade shortly before the team departed Phoenix, was scheduled to arrive in Seoul on Saturday.
The Padres’ 31-man travel roster also includes three catchers, seven infielders and four outfielders.
The roster has to be down to 26 players by 11 a.m. (Korea time) on March 20, six hours before the Padres open the season with the first of two games here against the Dodgers. Four pitchers and a position player on the travel roster will be trimmed. Two of those players will have to be optioned to the minors or placed on waivers. The other three can be designated as taxi squad members without any further transaction until March 28, when the rest of MLB opens the season.
The Padres are expected to essentially carry an 11-man bullpen for the two-game series here.
Yu Darvish and Joe Musgrove are scheduled to start. And with a week between their second game here and their next game, March 28 against the Giants at Petco Park, the Padres will have at least one of the pitchers expected to be in their rotation available to pitch in relief against the Dodgers.
The Padres, who arrived in Seoul early Friday morning, visited Gocheok Sky Dome on Friday afternoon for a light workout.
They play exhibitions Sunday against Team Korea and Monday against the LG Twins.
