Japan’s Nationwide Heatwave Prompts Urgent Public Health Warnings
A pervasive and intense heatwave has gripped Japan, prompting significant public health concerns and an urgent call for vigilance. The Meteorological Agency issued a "heatstroke alert" on Sunday, August 24, as temperatures soared across the archipelago.
Widespread High Temperatures and Health Risks
The heatwave has affected a broad swathe of the country, with numerous cities experiencing exceptionally high temperatures. On Sunday, the mercury climbed to 38.5 C in Koshigaya City, Saitama Prefecture, and 38.1 C in Kuki City, Saitama Prefecture. Other areas also recorded extreme heat, with readings exceeding 37 C in Kazo City, Saitama Prefecture, and the city of Ōta, Gunma Prefecture. Furthermore, 36.9 C was registered in the city of Sagamihara, Kanagawa Prefecture, and 36.7 C in Ota City, Tokyo.
The prevailing high temperatures pose a considerable risk of heatstroke, a serious and potentially fatal condition. Authorities are strongly advising residents to take extreme precautions to avoid heat-related illnesses.

To mitigate the dangers of the heatwave, the public is urged to stay indoors during the hottest parts of the day and to ensure adequate hydration. It is recommended to consume water and other beverages regularly to prevent dehydration. Additionally, using air conditioning and fans to keep living spaces cool is crucial. Public facilities such as community centers and public transportation hubs are being designated as cooling centers, offering respite from the heat for those who need it.
