Nepal is experiencing a significant decline in arrivals of Indian tourists, a crucial segment for its tourism industry. Hoteliers and tourism entrepreneurs in Nepal are expressing concern over this trend.
The primary reason identified for the decline is a fragile law and order situation within Nepal. Criminal activities such as snatching, robberies, and various scams are specifically targeting Indian tourists, creating a climate of fear and insecurity. Instances of fake currency scams are being reported, along with targeted harassment and theft incidents, particularly affecting Indian pilgrims visiting religious sites like Pashupatinath Temple. Furthermore, some segments of Nepali society are reportedly exhibiting aggressive behavior towards Indian visitors.
These issues are undermining Nepal’s traditional image as a hospitable destination that upholds the “Atithi Devo Bhava” (Guest is God) tradition. The problem is not confined to the capital, Kathmandu, but extends to border areas and other regions frequented by tourists. Acknowledging the issue, the Minister for Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation stated that the government is actively working to improve the law and order situation across the country. There are urgent calls for the Nepalese government to address these problems to restore confidence among Indian visitors and reverse the current decline in arrivals.
