If you’ve bookmarked 2024 as the year of Nepal, then these 10 incredible things must be on your to-do list in Pokhara, Nepal’s newly minted tourism capital

More popular as the gateway to the Annapurna Circuit, a popular trail in the Himalayas, Pokhara has long been synonymous with adventure and culture. While this town, which straddles the Phewa Lake, has been high up on Nepal itineraries, the official proclamation of Pokhara as this Himalayan nation’s tourism capital brings in many benefits. For starters, businesses such as discos, nightclubs, and live music venues in Pokhara will now operate through the night, ensuring the city’s lively atmosphere is up for grabs any hour of the day. Whether you’re a thrill-seeker or a nature enthusiast, here is all you can pack in a nifty city itinerary.

Embrace the colours of Phewa Lake

Pokhara’s heart throbs around the pristine Phewa Lake, the shores of which are filled with colourful paddle boats bobbing away. Head to the shore for a calming away and see the giant Annapurna Range glisten against the morning sun. Or rent a paddleboat and explore the serene waters yourself, soaking in the breathtaking views of the massif reflected on the glassy surface. Take a romantic ride on a traditional wooden barge or indulge in delicious local fare at one of the many lakeside restaurants.

Witness the Sunrise from Sarangkot

If you’re not in Pokhara for the many treks and sights it affords adventure enthusiasts, you can still grab an enviable sunrise from Sarangkot, a hilltop vantage point offering panoramic views of the Himalayas. After you’ve soaked in unfettered views of the Dhaulagiri Annapurna II and Lamjung peaks, sit with a cup of tea from the stalls nearby before heading back to the city. You can take a taxi to the viewpoint or hire a scooter from the city to make your own way to the point.

White Water Rafting Near Pokhara

Nepal is famous for its ice-cold glacial waters that snap you back into existence on a half day or full day white water rafting experiences. You can go rafting on the Trishuli River or at the Upper Seti River. The rapids are best explored in October-November, right after monsoon when the rivers are brimming with water. Paddle Nepal is an experienced company that lets you get your heart pumping with 1 ½ hours of non-stop adrenaline filled class III+/IV rapids adventure.

Seek Blessings at Bindhyabasini Temple

While the city is known for being the base of all adventure activities, do find time to explore its religious side. Immerse yourself in the spiritual heart of Pokhara at the Bindhyabasini Temple, dedicated to the fierce goddess Durga who is the city’s guardian deity. It is the oldest temple in the city, and is situated on a hill, from where the Himalayas reveal itself in all glory.

Go Paragliding In Sarangkot

Pokhara is Nepal’s answer to the paragliding world. The city is one of the best places in the world for commercial tandem paragliding, with incredible views to boot. You can float above the Phewa lake with Annapurna mountains framing your flight. The activity takes place in Sarangkot and costs around NPR 7000-11000, depending on how long your experience lasts.

Delve into History at the International Mountain Museum

Nepal’s history is inextricable from its mountains and the art of mountaineering. It is essential to document the life and times of people who have called these mountains home, or have made the arduous journey to scale them. To this end, Nepal Mountaineering Association (NMA) established the International Mountain Museum (IMM) in Pokhara. The museum was officially opened in 2004. Visitors here can learn more about the indigenous inhabitants of Nepal’s mountains, mountaineering equipment and the most intriguing section – the legends of Yeti.

Find Peace at The World Peace Pagoda

This is probably one of the most popular activities for all travellers in the city, often just for the view. Situated on the Anadu Hill, the foundation stone of this pagoda, along with relics of the Buddha, were gifted to Nepal by Japanese monks on 12 September 1973. You can take the road to the top, or cycle/trek your way through lush forests to see a bird’s eye view of the entire Pokhara Valley beneath you.

Take a Massage at Seeing Hands Clinic

Arguably, there is nothing more relaxing than a massage at the end of an exhausting day of sightseeing. You can put your feet up and book yourself into Seeing Hands. This massage parlour is part of a social enterprise empowering visually impaired individuals in Nepal through professional massage services. Founded in 2010 by Chiranjeevi Poudel, with support from Rob and Susan Ainley, the organisation employs 15 individuals, including 12 massage therapists. This way, you’ll also give back to the community even as you ease all the tension from your muscles.

Shop for Souvenirs at the Local Markets

There is something about the colourful handicrafts, souvenirs, and traditional clothing that makes you want to splurge on trinkets to take back home. Head to Lakeside Road to get the best Tibetan market experience. Bargain with friendly vendors and take home a piece of Pokhara’s charm. From intricately carved wooden statues to hand-woven pashmina shawls, hemp-based clothes and keychains, you’re sure to find unique treasures to commemorate your visit.

Pokhara’s culinary scene is a delightful blend of Nepali and international flavours. You must try a steaming bowl of Dal Bhat, Nepal’s iconic dish, or tantalise your taste buds with momos. Don’t miss the opportunity to try local specialties like Sel Roti, a ring-shaped fried bread, and Yak Cheese, a unique Himalayan delicacy. We also recommend heading to The Juicery, a cafe set in a lush garden overlooking the lake, where you can sample acai bowls, juices and breakfast dishes like Shakshuka.
