A leisurely afternoon at the Baisaran meadows near Pahalgam—a postcard-perfect alpine pasture in Jammu and Kashmir—turned into carnage on April 22.
Assailants from the Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) offshoot The Resistance Front (TRF) ambushed a group of tourists at the remote meadow, opening fire and killing at least 26 people—mostly vacationing Hindu pilgrims and tourists.
Around 20 others were injured as gunmen sprayed bullets at unarmed men, women, and children. Survivors said the assailants continued firing for as long as 15-20 minutes, then melted away into the surrounding pine forests using narrow hill trails before security forces could reach the roadless site.
