The country welcomed 519,000 visitors in December, up from 393,241 in the previous month, with an impressive 33% of these tourists coming from the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries. Reports from the Planning and Statistics Authority (PSA) reveal that the visitors were not just from the GCC countries, but from all corners of the globe, including Africa, Europe, the Americas, and Asia, including Oceania. Europeans alone made up 28% of the total arrivals, an indication of how the country’s allure has transcended geographical boundaries.
The Pivotal Role of Hamad International Airport
Most of these visitors arrived via air, with Hamad International Airport (HIA) serving as a key global hub. Boasting state-of-the-art facilities and services and now connected by 44 airlines, the airport has seen a 31% increase in passengers and a 22% increase in aircraft movements compared to the previous year. Ranking among the World’s Busiest Airports of 2023, HIA has also reported substantial cargo operations, further cementing its pivotal role in Qatar’s tourism boost.
Future Focus on Tourism
Qatar’s 3rd National Development Strategy 2024-2030 further emphasizes tourism as key to economic diversification and sustainable growth. The strategy places particular emphasis on business event tourism and infrastructure development, indicating a concerted effort to continue attracting global visitors. As a result, the country’s travel and tourism revenue is projected to grow at a compound annual growth rate of 11.13% from 2023 to 2027, a clear indication that Qatar is fast becoming a major global tourist destination.
