SINGAPORE: Singapore has confirmed its support for Taylor Swift’s highly anticipated Eras Tour, becoming the sole Southeast Asian destination for the pop icon’s performances.
In a joint statement released on Tuesday by the culture ministry and the Singapore Tourism Board, it was revealed that the authorities had collaborated directly with the concert organizers to facilitate the event.
The announcement comes in the wake of allegations made by Thai premier Srettha Thavisin, who claimed last week that Singapore had secured an exclusive deal for Swift to perform solely in the city-state, excluding other Southeast Asian countries from her tour. However, Singapore officials declined to disclose the grant amount and refrained from confirming whether an exclusive agreement had been reached, citing business confidentiality.
Allegations of Deal for Taylor Swift’s Tour
Despite the controversy surrounding the alleged exclusivity, Singapore emphasized the significant economic benefits that Swift’s performances are expected to bring to the country. While exclusive deals in the entertainment industry are not uncommon to request, they are less frequently accepted by artists, according to industry insiders.
Singapore’s success in attracting international artists has been evident since the relaxation of pandemic restrictions, with renowned acts such as Blackpink, Harry Styles, Ed Sheeran, and Coldplay gracing its stages. Swift’s upcoming six sold-out shows at the National Stadium in early March are anticipated to draw over 300,000 fans, further solidifying Singapore’s status as a premier destination for world-class entertainment.
Following her performances in Singapore, Swift will continue her tour in Europe, with projections suggesting that the tour could generate an astonishing estimated $2 billion in revenue.
