In a heartening turn of events for South Africa’s tourism industry, international tourist arrivals surged by 48.9% in 2023, hitting a total of 8.5 million visitors. The figures, covering January to December 2023, indicate a robust resurgence from the previous year’s numbers and reflect the strategic policy decisions and marketing efforts put forth by the South African government.
Regional Contributions to Tourism Growth
African nations formed the backbone of this tourism boom, accounting for a whopping 75.6% of total arrivals. A total of 6.4 million visitors stemmed from African countries, with Zimbabwe and Kenya marking impressive growths of 70.8% and 99%, respectively. The Americas, led by a 35% rise in tourists from the United States, contributed a 39.8% upswing. Europe followed suit with a healthy 38.2% increase, with the UK, Germany, the Netherlands, and Russia posting notable increments.
