The yacht race, originally known as the Governor’s Cup, has a rich history dating back to 1996. Inspired by the Cape to Rio fleet in 1996, former RMS St Helena Captain David Roberts envisaged a race to the remote British Overseas Territory, which resulted in the first Governor’s Cup race later that same year.
The first race in 1996 attracted 13 entries, with the second in 1998 securing a record 22 entries. The 2020 race was postponed due to the pandemic, but the successful 2022 event heightened anticipation for the upcoming race.
