Etihad Airways has launched a new direct service between Abu Dhabi and Chiang Mai, marking a significant step in expanding Thailand’s international connectivity. The inaugural flight was celebrated upon its arrival at Chiang Mai International Airport on November 16, 2023.
This new route is a key component of the Tourism Authority of Thailand’s (TAT) "Airline Focus" strategy, which aims to increase flight capacities and establish new air links to Thailand from key and emerging markets. The service directly supports the ongoing "Visit Thailand Year 2023: Amazing New Chapters" campaign.
The establishment of the Abu Dhabi-Chiang Mai route is the result of a strategic collaboration between Etihad Airways and the TAT. Mr. Yuthasak Supasorn, the TAT Governor, highlighted the importance of this new service in enhancing air links from the Middle East, a region identified as a primary tourism market for Thailand. The direct flight is expected to make Northern Thailand more accessible to tourists from this region, offering them new travel experiences.
The TAT’s "Airline Focus" initiative is a proactive effort to work with airlines to rebuild and expand Thailand’s international flight network. This partnership with Etihad is seen as a crucial move to attract more visitors and support the nation’s tourism recovery and growth.
The first flight, EY430, was greeted with a traditional water cannon salute upon its landing at Chiang Mai International Airport. A welcome reception was held to commemorate the launch, attended by key officials including the TAT Governor, the Ambassador of Thailand to the UAE, H.E. Mr. Sorayut Chasombat, and Etihad Airways’ Chief Revenue Officer, Mr. Arik De.
Mr. Arik De expressed enthusiasm for adding Chiang Mai to Etihad’s network, noting its cultural significance and natural beauty. He emphasized that the new service provides travelers with greater choice and a direct connection to the popular Northern Thai destination, reinforcing the airline’s commitment to the Thai market and its partnership with the TAT. The direct route is poised to strengthen tourism and business ties between the UAE and Thailand.
