Thailand Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin welcomed three legendary Liverpool players to the Government House of Thailand as part of a campaign to promote Thai tourism.
It is well known among Thai football fans that PM Srettha is a big Liverpool fan and is obsessed with football, even inspiring him to write a book called Srettha and Sports.
The 62 year old PM is now using his favourite sport and team to boost Thailand’s tourism by inviting the three legends of Anfield to join the promotional campaign. Today, May 2, he welcomed Michael Owen, Stephen McManaman, and Robert Fowler to the Government House as part of the campaign.
PPTV HD reported that the three football stars joined the campaign called, Living Legends: THE KOP DNA II, which took place between May 3 to 5. The event organising company called Influos and the Tourism Authorities of Thailand (TAT) are the main promoters of the campaign.
The legendary players are set to engage in a range of activities alongside Thai Liverpool fans, although specific details have not been disclosed yet.
At the gathering, Bangkok-born Srettha voiced his admiration for Liverpool, lauding it as one of the world’s premier football clubs, boasting a vast global following, notably in Thailand.
Owen, McManaman, and Fowler also revealed their fondness for Thai tourist spots, particularly in Phuket, and their appreciation for Thai cuisine. They expressed their joy at participating in the tourism promotion initiative and were impressed by the significant presence of Liverpool fans in Thailand.
PM Srettha told PPTV HD that the campaign aims to establish Thailand as a regional activity hub. He revealed a government plan for next year, saying 2025 will be the year of tourism and the government will launch several tourism campaigns and activities. He hoped that Liverpool FC would be involved in future activities.
In a post-meeting interview, the Thai PM disclosed that the football legends had informed him of the keen interest among many football players to visit Thailand.
He outlined his intentions to arrange a football match and extend invitations to players aged between 40 and 50, or alternatively, between 50 and 60. He expressed confidence that numerous players would be eager to participate and discover Thailand.
