The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT), in collaboration with the Fine Arts Department and Ayutthaya province, organized the “Maha Loi Krathong 2023” festival. The event, held from November 26-27, 2023, at Wat Mahathat in the Ayutthaya Historical Park, aimed to elevate the province’s status as a premier global cultural destination and promote Thailand’s rich cultural heritage.
According to Sudawan Wangsuphakijkosol, the Minister of Tourism and Sports, the festival is a key component of the government’s strategy to utilize “soft power” through Thai culture and traditions to boost the national economy. The event celebrated the Loi Krathong tradition, an ancient ritual of paying respects to the goddess of water, and was designed to offer a unique cultural experience to both Thai and international visitors.
### A Celebration of Eternal Faith
The theme for the 2023 festival was “The River of Eternal Faith.” The event at Wat Mahathat provided a grand showcase of Thai cultural traditions. Festivities included a spectacular light and sound show that illuminated the historical ruins, along with traditional Thai cultural performances.
Attendees also had the opportunity to participate in workshops on making krathongs, the decorative floats central to the festival, and crafting various traditional Thai handicrafts. These interactive elements were designed to immerse visitors in the local culture and provide a deeper understanding of the Loi Krathong festival’s significance.
### Nationwide Promotion of Loi Krathong Traditions
The Maha Loi Krathong festival in Ayutthaya served as the centerpiece for TAT’s broader campaign to promote Loi Krathong celebrations across the country. TAT highlighted five unique Loi Krathong traditions in different regions to showcase the diversity of the festival and encourage tourism throughout Thailand.
In addition to the event in Ayutthaya, the promotional efforts included the Yi Peng Festival in Chiang Mai, the Loi Krathong Sai Festival in Tak, the Loi Krathong Krab Kluai Mae Klong in Samut Songkhram, and the Somma Nam Khuen Pheng Seng Prathip Festival in Roi Et. This strategy aimed to distribute tourist traffic and offer a variety of authentic cultural experiences.
