Locals and tourists in Turkey have called for a boycott of restaurants and cafes as a result of rising prices. Turkey is known for being an affordable holiday destination, however photos have been circulating on social media and in Turkish newspapers showing inflated restaurant bills amid fears ‘tourism will suffer’.
Thousands of calls have been made nationwide to boycott restaurants accused of ‘exploiting economic issues and inflation as an excuse’ to set extortionate menu prices. Reports also claimed that customers have been served smaller portion sizes and lower quality meals in some places despite rising prices.
One bakery in Istanbul sparked outrage for selling a single cookie for 110 Turkish Liras (the equivalent of £2.70). ‘Boycott Overpriced Meals’ became a trending social media hashtag, urging a weekend-long boycott of restaurants and cafes last month.
