A new partnership aims to accelerate the adoption of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) by simplifying the complex process of tracking and transferring SAF certificates. The Sustainable Aviation Fuel Certificate (SAFC) Registry, developed by RMI, is collaborating with CHOOOSE, a leading platform for climate solutions, and Alaska Airlines to streamline SAF certificate transactions, making it easier for airlines and corporations to verifiably reduce their carbon emissions from air travel.
Currently, proving the environmental benefits of SAF and transferring those benefits to end-users can be challenging due to a lack of standardized systems. The SAFC Registry addresses this by providing a secure and transparent platform to track SAF’s journey from production to end-use, ensuring accurate accounting and preventing double-counting of environmental claims. This is crucial for building trust and confidence in the SAF market.
CHOOOSE will integrate its climate platform with the SAFC Registry, providing a seamless experience for Alaska Airlines and other users to purchase, track, and retire SAFCs. This integration allows companies to directly support SAF production and claim the associated emissions reductions, even if they are not directly purchasing or using the fuel itself. This book-and-claim system is critical to scaling SAF adoption as it decouples the physical flow of SAF from the environmental benefit, allowing SAF to be used where it has the greatest impact while enabling broader participation in decarbonizing aviation.
Alaska Airlines, a committed leader in aviation sustainability, is piloting this integrated system. By using the SAFC Registry and CHOOOSE platform, Alaska Airlines aims to more effectively track and manage its SAF investments, demonstrating its commitment to reducing its carbon footprint and contributing to a cleaner aviation future. This initiative not only allows Alaska Airlines to credibly claim emissions reductions but also sets a precedent for other airlines and corporations looking to invest in SAF.
The partnership between the SAFC Registry, CHOOOSE, and Alaska Airlines represents a significant step forward in the development of a robust and transparent SAF market. By leveraging technology to simplify SAF certificate transactions, this collaboration paves the way for greater investment in SAF production and ultimately contributes to the aviation industry’s ambitious decarbonization goals. This initiative promises to make sustainable aviation more accessible and verifiable, fostering a more environmentally responsible future for air travel. The integration of the CHOOOSE platform offers users a user-friendly interface to engage with SAFCs while the SAFC Registry ensures integrity through verified tracking.
