Online Travel Agencies (OTAs) are integrating their services with OpenAI’s ChatGPT, developing plugins that allow users to plan and book travel directly through the conversational AI platform. This move aims to simplify the travel planning process, provide personalized recommendations, and tap into ChatGPT’s user base.
OTAs Launch ChatGPT Plugins
Major travel companies, including Expedia, Kayak, Tripadvisor, GetYourGuide, and Klarna, have either launched or are developing plugins for ChatGPT. These plugins function as applications within the ChatGPT interface, enabling users to interact with the AI to search for flights, hotels, rental cars, activities, and tours. OpenAI initiated the plugin capability for ChatGPT in March, opening the door for various service providers to integrate.
Expedia was among the first to launch its plugin, allowing users to converse with ChatGPT to plan trips and subsequently book flights, accommodations, and activities through Expedia’s platform. The AI can suggest destinations, find available options based on user preferences, and then direct users to Expedia to finalize bookings. Kayak and its sister brand OpenTable also introduced plugins, offering searches for travel components and providing recommendations, with links to their respective sites for booking completion.
Tripadvisor is developing a plugin designed to leverage its extensive database of reviews and opinions, enabling ChatGPT users to ask for travel advice and recommendations. After receiving suggestions, users would be directed to Tripadvisor to make their bookings. GetYourGuide’s plugin focuses on tours and activities, helping users discover and book experiences. Klarna, in partnership with Expedia, has also launched a travel planner.
Enhancing Travel Planning and Discovery
The primary motivation behind these integrations is to create a more seamless and intuitive travel planning experience. OTAs envision ChatGPT as a powerful tool for discovery and inspiration, allowing users to move from an initial idea to a completed transaction within a single conversational interface. By understanding context and preferences through natural language, ChatGPT can potentially offer highly personalized recommendations that cater to individual traveler needs.
For OTAs, integrating with ChatGPT represents an opportunity to access a new channel for customer acquisition and engagement. The hope is that by meeting users where they are—on a popular AI platform—they can streamline the initial planning stages and potentially reduce customer acquisition costs. Companies are focused on delivering value to users by making travel planning less fragmented and more efficient, ultimately enhancing the overall customer journey from inspiration to booking.
