Thailand Airports Deploy Biometric System for Streamlined Passenger Processing
Airports of Thailand (AOT) has implemented an automated biometric identification system across six major airports to expedite passenger departure and boarding procedures. The system utilizes facial recognition technology to enable self-service processing at multiple airport touchpoints.
System Implementation and Rollout Timeline
The biometric system launched for domestic travellers on 1 November 2024, followed by international passenger availability on 1 December 2024. The rollout encompasses six airports: Suvarnabhumi, Don Mueang, Chiang Mai, Mae Fah Luang–Chiang Rai, Phuket, and Hat Yai.
Technology and Passenger Experience
Passengers enrol their facial data at check-in, which generates a biometric travel token. This token replaces traditional travel documentation and identification at key airport processes. The system enables self-service functionality across bag-drop, security screening, and boarding phases. Passengers use a single facial scan instead of presenting boarding passes or ID at these checkpoints.
