Lufthansa Group, through its Miles & More loyalty program, has launched a new NFT-based loyalty platform named Uptrip. The initiative, which went live on Monday, aims to reward air travelers by leveraging Web3 technology and digital collectibles. Passengers flying with airlines belonging to the Lufthansa Group can now collect NFTs by scanning their boarding passes.
The Uptrip platform enables users to gather digital trading cards, or non-fungible tokens (NFTs), that are linked to their specific flight details. These NFTs are issued on the Ethereum-compatible Polygon network, a blockchain platform known for its scalability. Travelers can accumulate unique NFTs representing various aspects of their journey, such as flight routes, types of aircraft, or destinations. The core concept encourages users to complete collections of these digital assets.
Upon completing specific NFT collections, users become eligible to redeem them for various travel-related rewards. These benefits include Miles & More award miles, flight upgrades, and access to airport lounges. For example, certain collections can be redeemed for 25,000 award miles. Lufthansa positions this as a pioneering effort, claiming Uptrip to be the first airline loyalty program to fully integrate NFTs into its reward system.
Miles & More, the established loyalty program for Lufthansa Group and its network of over a dozen partner airlines, serves a vast customer base. It currently boasts more than 30 million members across 200 countries and collaborates with 150 partners. The introduction of Uptrip represents a strategic move to modernize traditional loyalty programs, utilizing blockchain technology to enhance customer engagement and offer innovative digital rewards. Travelers interested in participating can download the Uptrip app to begin collecting NFTs.
