In 2021, Airbnb claimed to take more assertive measures to ban members of violent organizations using its platform. This decision was made in response to numerous violent incidents, such as the Charlottesville Unite the Right rally in 2017 and the Capitol attack in January 2021. Despite this stance, a whistleblower alleged that Airbnb disbanded the team responsible for identifying members of hate groups in 2023. The whistleblower served as an Airbnb contractor from May 2022 to November 2023.
