Although attendance at Allegheny County’s arts and culture events remains down since before the Covid-19 pandemic, two new reports show the number of visitors is growing — and they’re spending more.
The reports come as Pittsburgh arts organizations implement new efforts to grow their audiences.
In late February, the Richard King Mellon Foundation awarded $2.7 million to Downtown performing arts groups for audience engagement projects. The Pittsburgh Opera was the first to announce a grant-funded project: free Uber vouchers to get patrons to and from its Benedum Center shows.
“We know from research — both quantitative research studies as well as qualitative feedback from patrons — that for some segments of the population, transportation to get to the theater Downtown is a barrier to attending our performances,” said Chris Cox, the opera’s director of marketing and communications, at the time of announcement.
