Barcelona’s mayor announced a total ban on short-term rentals in the city starting from 2029. The plan involves not renewing existing short-term rental licenses and no longer issuing new ones. This decision did not agree with Airbnb’s head of policy, Jay Carney, who recently cited New York City’s Local Law 18 as an example of how not to regulate short-term rentals. Barcelona’s move reflects the city’s attempt to balance the needs of its residents with the benefits of tourism.
