The FAA’s intervention has been opposed by local anti-airport groups, which argue that Aspen should forfeit federal airport grants in order to resist FAA directives. However, this is not a viable option as Aspen has already received the grant money. Proponents of the restrictions maintain that there is no need for upgrades as the CRJ-700s will continue to operate for another three decades, but these arguments have been dismissed as unrealistic by critics.
