United Airlines currently holds the monopoly on flights between the US mainland and its territory, Guam. Foreign airlines are not currently permitted to operate routes in these locations due to Guam’s classification as a domestic location, and United’s hold of the market. However, United is exploring the possibility of pulling some flights out of Guam and instead focusing on routes between Tokyo, Narita, and Asia. As a result, Guam is urging Congress to allow foreign airlines to establish a route from Guam to Honolulu. Protectionism from the U.S has been disadvantageous for Guam and other U.S territories.
