In 2024, JetBlue announced the removal of carry-on bag restrictions improving its basic economy offering. The change comes a decade after the airline’s lagging financial performance forced out CEO Dave Barger. As part of the airline’s strategy to match the market, JetBlue had previously mimicked legacy airlines’ practices, squeezing legroom, reducing inflight investments, and increasing fees. These efforts did not help JetBlue’s financial problems. Despite the challenging airline industry dynamics, including governmental benefits favoring incumbent carriers such as priority access to busy airports, antitrust immunity, and access to global alliances and international airports, JetBlue decided to pivot its strategy. The lifting of carry-on bag restriction is a part of this strategy, aimed at providing a better basic economy experience to its passengers.
