The Jammu and Kashmir Tourism Department is embarking on a new initiative to promote adventure tourism, with a particular focus on high-altitude paragliding. This strategic push aims to position Jammu and Kashmir as a premier adventure destination, driven by safety, skill development, and sustainable practices.
Secretary Dr. Syed Abid Rasheed Shah recently convened a meeting with local adventure tourism stakeholders, including paragliding operators, to outline the department’s vision. The primary objective is to enhance the professionalism and safety standards within the adventure tourism sector. This involves implementing robust Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) specifically for paragliding operations and introducing a mandatory licensing system for paragliding pilots.
A technical committee is being established to identify and certify suitable high-altitude paragliding sites across the region. This committee will ensure that all designated locations meet stringent safety criteria, providing a secure environment for both operators and tourists. The emphasis is on developing a skilled workforce and ensuring that all adventure activities are conducted with the highest levels of safety and expertise.
Beyond paragliding, the department is also exploring the promotion of other adventure tourism verticals. These include activities such as rock climbing, mountaineering, white water rafting, and hot air ballooning. The comprehensive approach aims to diversify tourism offerings, attract a wider range of adventure enthusiasts, and unlock the full potential of Jammu and Kashmir’s natural landscape.
The initiative is designed to create substantial employment opportunities for local youth and foster economic growth. By professionalizing the adventure tourism sector and encouraging private sector participation, the Jammu and Kashmir Tourism Department seeks to establish a sustainable and vibrant adventure tourism ecosystem that benefits both visitors and the local community.
