Rod Cuthbert, founder of Viator, revealed that the concept for the tours and activities business originally came from a contract with Sabre in the late ’90s. Though the deal fell through, it led to a lucrative opportunity for Cuthbert. Before Viator was sold to Tripadvisor for $200 million in 2014, the company faced several obstacles, including securing funding. Cuthbert shared at Phocuswright Europe 2024 event that the company visited approximately 20 venture capitalists in its early stages.
