Ecuador has temporarily suspended its visa waiver agreement with China due to concerns over irregular immigration patterns. Recent data suggests that about half of the Chinese nationals who entered Ecuador in recent months did not depart according to protocols, instead, staying beyond the permitted 90-day period. It is believed these individuals are either remaining in Ecuador illegally or using non-official routes to migrate to other countries, particularly the USA. According to Ecuador’s national statistics institute, there were 48,381 such instances in 2023. This suspension comes despite China’s own moves to ease visa restrictions for other countries.
