Last summer, John Wilson went to the beach for the first time in 30 years.
It was all thanks to an accessible beach day hosted by a surf lifesaving club at Port Campbell, on Victoria’s Great Ocean Road.
Volunteers used a hoist to help Mr Wilson into a wheelchair designed for sand and wheel him onto the beach via the surf club’s access ramp — a process he cannot do alone.
“As my disease progressed, it got harder and harder to do these things,” he said.
“I guess at the time I didn’t worry too much about it because I thought, ‘Oh well, that’s what it is.’
“Then to suddenly find that there are ways of being able to access the beach; it’s very special.”
The inclusion days mean the world to locals whose ability to go to the beach is hindered…
