Delta Airlines is adding a flight to Harlingen, Texas from Austin, raising questions about the strategy behind these intra-Texas flights on regional jets to smaller markets like McAllen and Midland. The only other routes that Delta flies from Austin are to its own hubs. According to Gary Leff, the purpose of these routes is primarily to occupy gates at the almost saturated Austin airport until its new concourse opens in 2030s.
