Saudi Arabia has implemented a new 24-hour E-Visa for Umrah, as part of an ambitious plan to boost spiritual tourism in the region. The new process is said to reduce the time it takes to issue visas, from several days to minutes, making the journey to Mecca, the holiest Islamic site, faster and easier for Muslims worldwide.
The introduction of the E-Visa is part of Vision 2030, a project launched by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman to diversify the country’s economy and reduce its dependency on oil. One of the key components of Vision 2030 is to increase the number of Umrah visitors from 8 million to 30 million annually by 2030.
The E-Visa application is available online and can be filled out by individuals or by a licensed travel agent. This simplified process is expected to attract more Muslims to perform Umrah, one of the five pillars of Islam that involves a pilgrimage to Mecca, which can be undertaken at any time of the year.
Moreover, with the new E-Visa, visitors are now allowed to travel to other Saudi cities, resorts, and tourist attractions. Previously, Umrah visa holders were restricted to visiting Mecca, Medina, and the port city of Jeddah.
Apart from benefiting pilgrims, the new visa system is also expected to boost the Saudi economy, create jobs, and enrich the local tourism industry. The Kingdom’s tourism sector, seen as a significant contributor of non-oil revenues, is projected to contribute 10% of the country’s GDP by 2030.
Besides these efforts, Saudi Arabia is also working to improve the services and facilities at the holy sites. The government has allocated around $50 billion for the expansion of Mecca’s Grand Mosque and $13 billion for projects in Medina.
