How did the state come about?
After India gained independence in 1947, in 1950, the southern and eastern Andhra region was integrated into Madras state, while the Telangana region became part of Hyderabad state. The demand for separate statehood (from Madras) by the Andhras grew so intense that a local leader, Potti Sreeramulu, resorted to fasting to death in 1952 to draw attention to the issue.
