TEHRAN – Iran’s tourism minister, addressing the 21st Symposium of Iranian Archaeology held at the National Museum of Iran, underscored the nation’s rich cultural heritage, citing approximately 19,000 historical hills that are scattered across the country.
Amidst a gathering of esteemed archaeologists and enthusiasts, Minister Azatollah Zarghami lamented the insufficient budget allocated to preserve these invaluable treasures, stressing the need to secure even their perimeters.
His call for further safeguarding those archaeological gems was made after the minister acknowledged challenges posed by smuggling and illicit trade in antiquities.
Elsewhere in his remarks, the minister emphasized the interdisciplinary nature of the field, blending science, art, and skill fueled by a profound passion for the past. He advocated for greater public engagement, recognizing the cultural significance of archaeology in shaping national identity.
With this platform, Zarghami hopes to foster greater awareness and appreciation for Iran’s rich archaeological heritage, underscoring its importance in shaping the nation’s cultural narrative.
Starting on March 4, the three-day symposium is intended to serve as a platform for the exchange of ideas, fostering a deeper understanding of Iran’s archaeological heritage and its significance in the broader context of history.
The event also featured the unveiling of research findings and historical documents, alongside an exhibition showcasing over 400 artifacts from 12 historical sites.
Iran is home to an extensive collection of archaeological sites that provide a glimpse into the rich history of the Persian civilization.
The earliest archaeological expeditions to Iran began in the mid-19th century when British and French archaeologists were studying Susa and its surroundings in southwestern Iran. One of the earliest evidence of human occupation within the Iranian plateau comes primarily from archaeological remains in caves and rock shelters that date to the Early Paleolithic, circa 45,000 BC.
